La pandemia del Covid-19 dejó grandes pérdidas en artesanos de Metepec, que no acaban por recuperar sus ventas de hace dos años.
De acuerdo a Julio Pelayo, de diciembre a enero no se observaron las ventas que tuvieron en diciembre del 2019 “ha estado muy relajado, con ventas muy bajas debido al Covid, además considero que mucha gente recibió su aguinaldo y prefirieron ahorrar o salir de sus deudas”.
El artesano de los “árboles de la vida”, un tipo de artesanía muy buscada por visitantes extranjeros provenientes de Estados Unidos, Alemania, Japón, Corea del Sur, Francia, Australia y también de México.
“El árbol de la vida representa el pasaje de Génesis 1 de la Biblia, con la creación de Adán y Eva por Dios Padre: en este modelo estamos representando el día y la noche, la luz y la oscuridad; también aparece la serpiente que representa al mal”, explicó quien tiene experiencia de 10 años.
En Metepec hay varios artesanos destacados, entre ellos Óscar Soteno, pero hay muchos talleres familiares, todos viven en el Estado de México. La creatividad incluye temáticas de muñecas de trapo, voladores de Papantla, el Arca de Noé, Catrinas, cazuelas y hasta de autos de la Fórmula 1.
“Con el barro primero hay que barrerlo, se prepara, se cierne para que quede muy fino; de lo contrario salen grumos, luego se van encajando las piezas con alambres, se dejan secar y reposar por unos días, ya cuando se esté libre de humedad se ingresa a un horno tradicional de leña”.
Posteriormente se pinta a mano cada una de las pequeñas piezas, para dar el aspecto de un árbol con muchas ramas y una temática casi siempre religiosa.
En precios el árbol de la vida más chico tiene un costo de 65 pesos y el más grande 600 pesos.

Pandemic low sales in artisans

The Covid-19 pandemic left great losses in Metepec artisans, who do not end up recovering their sales from two years ago.
According to Julio Pelayo, from December to January the sales they had in December 2019 were not observed: “it has been very relaxed, with very low sales due to Covid, I also consider that many people received their bonus and preferred to save or leave their debts”.
The craftsman of the “trees of life”, a type of craft highly sought after by foreign visitors from the United States, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Australia, and also Mexico.
“The tree of life represents the passage from Genesis 1 of the Bible, with the creation of Adam and Eve by God the Father: in this model, we are representing day and night, light and darkness; the snake that represents evil also appears”, explained who has 10 years of experience.
In Metepec there are several outstanding artisans, including Oscar Soteno, but there are many family workshops, all of whom live in the State of Mexico. The creativity includes themes of rag dolls, Papantla flyers, Noah’s Ark, Catrinas, pots, and even Formula 1 cars.
“With the mud, you have to sweep it first, prepare it, sift it so that it is very fine; Otherwise, lumps come out, then the pieces are fitted with wires, they are left to dry and rest for a few days, and when they are free of moisture, they are placed in a traditional wood-fired oven”.
Subsequently, each of the small pieces is painted by hand, to give the appearance of a tree with many branches and a theme that is almost always religious.
In terms of prices, the smallest tree of life costs 65 pesos and the largest 600 pesos.
