Reynosa, Tam.-

Vaping is not harmless
By Beatriz Flores
Reynosa, Tam.-
Of different shapes, sizes, colors, and even different flavors, are vapers or electronic cigarettes, which have become very popular, requested by people of all ages, and are usually seen with them in places such as workplaces and even schools.
“It seems that it is something very normal, that it is something harmless and innocuous, but it is not like that and that is why it is so important to know about them; as well as what the tobacco industry does not tell us”, said Astrid Zapata Espinosa, who is a clinical psychologist and director of the Specialty Medical Unit of the La Curva Primary Addiction Care Center.
She mentioned that vapers “are electronic ignition systems manufactured by tobacco companies with the hidden purpose of inducing young people to consume nicotine differently; now they are doing it with a more attractive model to sell them this idea that it is a way of status, of being fashionable”.
The fact that there are devices in the form of USB memories or even pens favors that they can go unnoticed in schools, for which she mentioned that it is important to know about them and how they affect health and well-being.
“According to research carried out, both in Mexico and in the United States, it has been found that vapers are cancer generators since they have chemical derivatives such as nicotine, benzene, and other heavy metals, such as nickel, lead, and tin that are harmful. for health”, he said.
She stated that these products are toxic to humans and that there is no safe tobacco product.
“In the short term, you can develop symptoms or illnesses in days or weeks, for example, cough, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, chest pains, very fast heartbeat, fevers, chills, and lung diseases”, she said.
She also commented that other effects are lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases and can almost double the risk of a heart attack in a person.
“It has been observed that high concentrations of nicotine and its long-term consumption can affect the brain development of children, adolescents, and developing fetuses. In addition, they have substances such as formaldehyde and alcohol, which are capable of causing DNA damage and mutagenesis”, said Zapata Espinosa.
FALSE ALLY TO QUIT SMOKING
They also master in thanatology said that there are more than 30 substances that are not reported on the packaging of vapers, so many ignore the risks involved in their use, but there are still more who believe that it helps to quit smoking.
“People come to tell you ‘I quit smoking, I don’t smoke anymore, I only use the vape’, and it contains nicotine and all these substances; In addition, there is no documented evidence, nor has the effectiveness of vapers to quit smoking has been scientifically proven”, she explained.
She explained that, with them, people increase the number of inhalations and the frequency to receive the dose that they previously had with the traditional cigarette.
Something that also helps a lot to quit smoking, she said, is the proper use of free time, for example, in recreational, educational, and healthy activities; which will be more attractive if they are part of the interests of the person who practices them.
Talking about the existing situation with people you trust will help you feel accompanied, without neglecting specialists, and in Mexico you can be assisted by one of them through Linea de la Vida, which is a Citizen Attention Center, by calling the telephone number 800-911-2000.
